Imaging Nerves Using X-ray is the New Standard of Imaging.

NeuroView Contrast

Localizes to nerves by binding the same receptor as lidocaine.

Metabolizes similar to lidocaine, thus reversible.

Areas of Intended Use

1

Surgical Navigation for Preservation

Nerve injury during surgery happens. This can lead to permanent disability or impairment. Surgical navigation using CT is ubiquitous in healthcare. NeuroView now provides the technology to allow surgical navigation of nerves thereby protecting then.

2

Surgical Navigation for Pain Treatment

Chronic pain is a leading cause of disability in the U.S. and global community. Pain is transmitted via nerves and removal of nerves (denervation) eliminates pain. NeuroView provides visualization of nerves to eliminate pain.

3

Diagnostic Radiology

Peripheral neuropathy is loosely applied term to nerves that function abnormally causing pain. NeuroView offers a mechanism to image diseased nerves for diagnosis and monitoring.

The five senses – sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch – are all grounded in nerves; it is fitting to have a means of imaging them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Aren’t there problems if you remove the sensory pathways communicating pain?

Potentially, depending upon which nerves are being removed. Those in the lower back bear little concern, while those in large joints (knee and hip) may require follow up imaging to evaluate the joint.

What are the steps before it’s approved for human use?

There are four steps:

1. New Drug Application (6 months-12)

2. Phase 1 Trial (6-12 months)

3. Phase 2 Trial (12 months)

4. Phase 3 Trial (12 months)

Who are the end users?

Hospitals, Surgery Centers, Radiology Centers, Research Scientists.

Meet the Inventor and Principal Investigator

James Edward McCarthy (M.D.)

  • Dr McCarthy is a board-certified reconstructive surgeon who exists to participate in the restoration of all things – including nerves. He completed his education at the Honors College of Oregon State University, Dartmouth College, and University of Wisconsin-Madison. His clinical practice focus is hand and reconstructive microsurgery. He is an active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery, American Association of Hand Surgery, and American Society of Peripheral Nerve.

He conceived of NeuroView Contrast while caring for a patient with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) seeking to image the diseased nerve using CT in order to further understand the disease mechanism and how to restore healing. Nearly $35,000 dollars of self-funding, countless hours over 8 years, and many cheer leaders have lead to the creation of NeuroView. This work has been presented internationally and multiple occasions nationally.

This work has been funded by the NIH Blueprint MedTech Program and Northern Colorado Research Fund.
